USEFUL TRAVEL TIPS FOR VISITORS TO GHANA


[Entry Requirements!
A valid passport is required for all visitors to Ghana. Ghanaian diplomatic missions abroad will assist in issuing individual as well as group visas where necessary.
[Vaccinations and Health Facilities)
Visitors should have current medical certificates showing vaccination against yellow fever. A Tetanus shot is also suggested. Malaria is also prevalent in certain parts of the country. You are advised to consult your doctor prior to leaving on your visit to begin appropriate medication. Good medical facilities are available in major towns and cities however visitors are advised to bring along any medication they regularly need. Doctor and hospital treatments require immediate cash payment for health care.
[Banking and Foreign Exchange!
Banks and foreign exchange Bureau are available at the
airport and in all major towns/cities. Credit cards and
Travelers Checks are accepted, although the rates of
exchange may be slightly lower than for cash. Banking
hours Monday - Thursday 0830 / 1400 and Friday 0830
/1500. The currency in Ghana is the Cedi.                      "


[Entertainment]
As in most major cities an active nightlife exists downtown. Hotel bars, restaurants and entertainment are plenty available. More cultural activities can be found in the many festivals and local theaters.
[Drug Penalties!
Penalties for possession, use or trafficking in illegal drugs are strict. Convicted offenders can expect jail sentences and fines.
[Temperature and Clothing]
Ghana enjoys a tropical climate - moderate temperatures and continuous sunshine most of the year. There are rains between April and July and the dry season occurs during October to March. If you intend to sunbathe take ample sun-creams and beware of the strength of the sun it can be particularly hot in the afternoons. Dress for business and official meetings as you would in any North American or European capital. For pleasure informal dress is acceptable, shirts, slacks, skirts and dresses - shorts and swimwear are acceptable for the resort areas, beaches and hotel pods.


[Communications!
Modem and efficient mail, telex, telephone and fax facilities are available in Accra and most regional capitals, and most major hotels provide in-room overseas dialing along with business centers. Overseas dialing from Ghana is obtained by the prefix code 00 followed by the country and city codes - the International code for Ghana is 233. Postal services, DHL and FedEx services are available.
[Hotel Accommodation
Hotel accommodations vary from major hotel chains in Accra and the more popular tourist destinations to smaller family operated hotels and bed and breakfast facilities outside of the major towns and cities. The Ghana Tourist Board keep an updated directory of all accommodations and they can be reached in the USA by calling 212-832-1300 and in Accra by calling 233 21 228711.
As with other countries some areas are not considered safe, particularly after dark. Take normal security precautions and never carry more money than you need.


[Transportation!
Taxis are plentiful - both for individuals, private hire and group transportation. Your hotel or local guide can assist in securing a comfortable ride. Major rental car companies such as Avis and Hertz have established offices in the major towns, cities and airport. Local tour operators provide transportation and a range of tours from a half-day city tour to multiple day regional excursions.
Kotoka International Airport is the modem gateway to Ghana. Ghana Airways operates a modem fleet of DC10 aircraft on its international routes. Services to and from New York (JFK) are three times weekly (four in high season) with excellent connections to most major Canadian and US carriers. Arrival times into Ghana provide onward DC 10 service into Johannesburg and/or Harare, together with connecting DCS services into Abidjan; Bamako; Banjul; Lagos; Lome; Monrovia; Ouagadougou; Freetown; Dakar and Conakry.
